Description

My favorite favorite costume in Phantom.  I was jumping up & down when I was commissioned to make this :) This was inspired by the USA version.

This massive undertaking included about 200 hours of embroidery alone, for both the ruffles and the custom-embroidered shawl around the neckline.

The base is a peach silk taffeta from Mood Fabrics. Different sized scalloped embroidery adorns yards and yards of fabric ruffled and carefully arranged in tiers.

A custom underskirt with many layers of black netting helps keep the bell shape of the skirt that is flat in the front, and with a bustle effect in the back.

Gathered tulle peeks out from in between each skirt tier. A complimentary detail in the bodice is the back peplum, where brocade lining peeks out between the lower bodice panels.  An extremely tricky construction detail but lovely effect!  There are about 3 or 4 different size scallops in the bodice, carefully placed to look as continuous as possible among the many seams and panels of the bodice.  The bodice is boned with flat and spiral steel boning.

The front of the bodice has a sumptuous “stomacher” with different fabrics, appliques, buttons & mock lacing.  The shawl adorning the neckline was embroidered to match the folk elements in the stomacher and the bow detailing of the sleeves.  It includes lovely dangling beaded trim!

The sleeves are also highly detailed, with black chantilly lace peeking out from underneath the scalloped engageantes.  Decorating the sleeves are black applique trim, beaded trim, and a jacquard ribbon meticulously lined in salmon satin - matching the custom satin piping in the stomacher.

The front ‘apron’ area is a highly detailed and embroidered metallic gold lace on black tulle, with a layer of black lining behind it.

All in all, an advanced costume that was even more complex than I originally thought!  Embroidery, embroidery, embroidery – all of the embroidery on this costume includes – (custom) embroidery on all the scallops, (custom) embroidery on the shawl, embroidered gold lace, woven jacquard ribbon, embroidered suede in the stomacher, woven brocades in the stomacher and back peplum, and I suppose you could count the chantilly lace as a sort of embroidery?

I am so pleased and proud of how this came out and it makes me want to jump into a UK version.  I can never have enough Aminta!

Stay tuned for my faux-embroidered fabric that will soon be available on Spoonflower - I’m in the process of ordering swatches & proofing them before finalizing it and making it for sale.  There will be large, medium, small, and tiny scalloped printed fabric - in both peach, and salmon colors - (8 total fabrics added to Spoonflower!).
